Despite long lines at polling places, Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) will not extend early voting hours through Sunday.
"Early voting will end Saturday night," Scott told reporters Thursday, according to ABC Action News. “But I want everybody to get out to vote.”
Democrats and the League of Women Voters had called for early voting hours to be extended. Some voters have faced hour-long lines. Time’s Michael Grunwald, who lives in Miami Beach, said that he tried voting twice but lines were two hours and an hour and a half. He finally voted after waiting 45 minutes in line.
Former Republican Govs. Charlie Crist and Jeb Bush extended early voting hours when faced with similar situations, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
Florida’s GOP-controlled legislature shortened the number of early voting days from 14 to eight, which Democrats saw as a way to limit their voter base.
